ChatGPT Voice Now Works in Finances: What to Know

The essentials

ChatGPT Voice now works in Finances. OpenAI's help page covers limits, privacy and data deletion for linked accounts, but it doesn't mention voice.

"Let's talk money. Literally." That's how the official ChatGPT account, posting at 18:00 UTC on Nov. 3, said ChatGPT Voice now works inside Finances, the US feature that lets ChatGPT read your linked bank and credit data. You can ask about spending, savings and other money questions out loud instead of typing them.

The post, which includes a short video, says to "securely connect your accounts through Finances, then use Voice to talk spending, savings, and all the money questions on your mind," and points readers to chatgpt.com/finances. It doesn't say which plans get Voice or what changed from earlier versions. The rules that matter before you connect a bank are in OpenAI's Help Center article on Finances, and that article never mentions voice.

Who can use it, and what it connects to

According to the article, Finances is available in the US to Free, Go, Plus and Pro users on web, iOS and Android. Two separate connections feed it: financial accounts through Plaid, and credit report data through Experian. You can use either or both. Connecting a bank doesn't connect your credit, and the credit score feature doesn't require a bank connection.

Once connected, the Finances page shows widgets for spending by category, upcoming payments, subscriptions, bills, net worth, portfolio allocation and an Experian credit score. In a regular chat, typing /finances or @finances lets ChatGPT use that context. You can also save "financial memories," such as a savings goal or a loan you owe, and view or delete them from the Finances page.

What it can't do

The article is direct about limits. ChatGPT cannot move money, pay bills, change account settings, make trades, change retirement contributions, open or close accounts, file taxes or act as your financial, legal, tax or investment adviser. For taxes it can organize information and explain concepts, and OpenAI adds that it is "not a fiduciary, registered investment adviser, broker-dealer, tax preparer, or law firm."

Data, and what disconnecting doesn't erase

Finances conversations "follow the same model training settings you choose across ChatGPT," which you can change in Settings, then Data controls. Disconnecting Finances, or removing one account, deletes synced account data from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, and the Plaid data tied to the ChatGPT connection within 30 days under Plaid's policies. Disconnecting Experian does the same for credit report data.

The article is just as clear about what stays. Disconnecting a source "does not delete information already in your conversation history," and past conversations and financial memories are deleted separately. Temporary chats don't access connected accounts and don't create or update memories.

Why a number may look wrong

OpenAI lists the usual causes. Syncing normally takes a few minutes and can take several hours. A bank may share balances without full transaction history, holdings, APRs or due dates. Transfers, card payments, refunds and duplicate pending transactions can be miscounted as spending, and the article adds that "AI can make mistakes." The credit score is a VantageScore 3.0 from your Experian report, updated monthly, and a recent payment may not show until the lender reports it. Checking the score is a soft inquiry that doesn't affect it.

The question the page leaves open

The help article and the X post answer different questions. The article says nothing about voice: it doesn't say whether a spoken question about your balance is stored like a typed one, whether the training setting applies the same way, or whether temporary chats behave differently in Voice. We don't have those answers.

On timing, TokenPost reported on Nov. 4 that voice support reached Free and Go users on Oct. 2, a month before the post, which would make Nov. 3 an announcement rather than a first day. We couldn't confirm that from an OpenAI source.

The Data controls setting is the one to read before you connect an account. After that, the remaining judgment is a personal one: whether you're comfortable saying a balance out loud wherever you happen to be.
